What is high blood pressure?

High blood pressure (HBP), or hypertension, is a form of heart disease that places a higher than normal force on the inside of your blood vessels.

High blood pressure creates unhealthy amounts of stress on the walls and the tissues of your circulatory system. Over time, high blood pressure causes damage that puts you at greater risk of serious health conditions, like heart failure and stroke.

Health experts call high blood pressure the silent killer because you may not have any symptoms of your condition until after it causes severe damage. Regular physicals and blood pressure checks are the only way to know if you have elevated blood pressure. If you have high blood pressure, lifestyle changes and holistic care may reverse or improve your risks significantly.

You are at high risk for high blood pressure if you are obese or overweight, a smoker, sedentary, or you have a diet high in processed foods. Conditions like high cholesterol, diabetes, and other forms of heart disease may also impact your risk factors.

How is high blood pressure measured?

High blood pressure refers to the internal pressure of your blood vessels. Dr. Karki measures your blood pressure using a manual or automatic blood pressure cuff. The blood pressure cuff inflates around your arm, which temporarily slows the blood through your vessels.

As the cuff releases pressure and your blood flow returns, the blood pressure machine captures a reading of the internal vessel pressure during and after your heartbeat. The reading consists of two numbers:

  • Systolic: the upper number is the measure of blood pressure during heartbeats
  • Diastolic: the lower number is the measurement of blood pressure between heartbeats

An ideal blood pressure reading is near or below 120/80. A consistently high blood pressure of 140/90 means you could be at risk for heart or vascular damage.

What are the possible complications of high blood pressure?

If you have high blood pressure, your risk for many forms of heart disease becomes significantly higher. These may include carotid artery disease, congestive heart failure, and coronary artery disease.

You are also at risk for conditions such as:

  • Stroke
  • Aneurysm
  • Kidney failure
  • Varicose veins
  • Erectile dysfunction (ED)
  • Glaucoma, or increased pressure inside the eye

To help you control your high blood pressure and lower your risks, Dr. Karki and the Bella Terra Primary Care team offer risk assessment, expert diagnosis, lifestyle coaching, blood pressure checks, medication management, and exercise and nutritional counseling.
